IT Consulting Services for Sydney Businesses

Matrix Solutions advises Sydney law firms, finance firms, real estate agencies, and insurance companies on technology strategy, cyber security, cloud hosting, and IT risk. As a Sydney-based managed IT services provider, we run the MatrixCloud hosted desktop for Australian professional firms.

You keep three documents from our work: an assessment report, a roadmap, and a design. We can then project-manage delivery for you.

“Matrix Solutions have hosted our website and email service for many years. As a small law firm we are highly dependent on our outsourced IT providers to keep us productive. We have always found the team at Matrix Solutions responsive and knowledgeable in resolving any issues with emails and web hosting, and allowing us to get back online with minimal impact.”

What Does IT Consulting in Sydney Include?

IT consulting in Sydney includes five areas: strategy, cyber security, cloud, virtual CIO leadership, and IT audit. Our IT consultants start with an assessment of your environment, then give you a written plan you can act on.

Finger pointing on the screen where there is a picture of cloud and its services

Each area produces something you keep:

  • IT strategy and roadmapping: a ranked list of technology projects tied to your business goals and budget.
  • Cyber security and compliance consulting: a gap assessment against your privacy obligations and the Essential Eight, the Australian Signals Directorate’s eight baseline mitigation strategies.
  • Cloud and infrastructure planning: a recommendation on private, public, or hybrid hosting, with a recovery plan attached.
  • Virtual CIO leadership: an adviser who owns the roadmap and reports on it to your senior management team.
  • IT audit and risk assessment: a findings report with a ranked risk list.

IT Strategy Consulting and Roadmaps

IT strategy consulting turns your business goals into a prioritised IT roadmap. We review what you run today. Then we put the projects that cut the most risk, or add the most value, at the top of the list.

Security risk usually ranks near the top for a firm that holds confidential client files. A breach can undo the value of other projects.

A roadmap from us contains four parts:

A baseline assessment of your current systems and performance.

A ranked list of projects, ordered by risk and value.

An IT budget for the work.

Service recommendations for each project.

A roadmap holds only if someone owns it. Governance sets who approves spending, who owns each system, and how you measure results, and a governance framework turns those rules into a repeatable structure.

Cyber Security and Compliance Consulting

Cyber security and compliance consulting helps reduce the chance and cost of a breach. We assess your controls against the Essential Eight, flag gaps that may affect your Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) obligations, and rank the fixes.

Ransomware is a threat to plan around. The Annual Cyber Threat Report 2024–25 from the Australian Signals Directorate (ASD) names it the most disruptive cybercrime threat of that financial year.

Under the Cyber Security Act 2024 (Cth), businesses with annual turnover above $3 million, and critical infrastructure responsible entities, must report ransomware payments to ASD. Reports are due within 72 hours of the payment, or of learning it was made for them. The duty has applied since 30 May 2025.

The Essential Eight is ASD’s baseline framework of eight mitigation strategies. It sets four maturity levels, numbered zero to three. The eight strategies are:

Patch applications.

Patch operating systems.

Multi-factor authentication.

Application control.

Restrict administrative privileges.

Restrict Microsoft Office macros.

User application hardening.

Regular backups.

Our guide to the ASD Essential Eight maturity model explains how to pick a target level.

Day to day, our managed cyber security services help maintain these eight controls.

Privacy Act Data Breach Notification Duties

The Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) includes the Notifiable Data Breaches (NDB) scheme. It covers Australian Government agencies and businesses with annual turnover above $3 million. Some smaller businesses are covered too, such as private health service providers, and tax file number (TFN) recipients for breaches involving TFN information.

Covered organisations must notify affected individuals and the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) when a breach is likely to result in serious harm. In July 2026, the OAIC reported 1,205 data breach notifications for the 2025 calendar year, and 716 came from malicious or criminal activity. Our cyber security and compliance consulting reviews the security controls that support your Privacy Act notification duties. Strong controls do not stop every incident, so your disaster recovery plan decides how long an outage lasts.

Cloud and Infrastructure Consulting

Two decisions shape your cloud setup: where each system runs, and how quickly it recovers. We compare private, public, and hybrid hosting for each workload, then set backup and disaster recovery targets your business can tolerate. Our planning covers Microsoft 365, Azure, and the MatrixCloud hosted desktop that our managed IT cloud services run.

The three hosting models differ in who shares the infrastructure:

Private cloud

Infrastructure reserved for one client, so no other tenant competes for your capacity.

Public cloud

Shared infrastructure that flexes with demand.

Hybrid cloud

A mix of private and public cloud, such as steady systems on private cloud and seasonal peaks on public cloud.

Recovery planning starts with two numbers. Recovery time objective (RTO) is the time you can afford to be offline. Recovery point objective (RPO) is the amount of recent data you can afford to lose.

For example, a four-hour RTO means restoring systems within four hours. A one-hour RPO means losing no more than one hour of data. Our managed disaster recovery services help you meet both numbers. After sign-off, a virtual CIO can own those targets for you.

Virtual CIO Consulting

A virtual CIO owns your technology roadmap without a full-time salary. Our virtual CIOs work in three stages: assessment, planning, and design. They review your current IT performance, plan your IT strategy with your senior management team, then design the infrastructure to support it.

Our virtual CIO services suit Sydney firms that need CIO-level guidance but lack the budget or workload for a full-time hire.

IT Audit and Risk Assessment Services

Every consulting engagement, virtual CIO work included, starts with an IT audit and risk assessment. It records what you run, who can access it, and where the gaps sit. We inspect your systems against your business needs and the Essential Eight, then rank the gaps by risk.

An audit from us covers five areas:

  • Hardware, software, and licence inventory.
  • User accounts and access rights.
  • Backup and recovery capability.
  • Security controls against the Essential Eight.
  • Vendor and support contracts.

The findings report then feeds your technology roadmap.

IT Consulting for Professional Services Firms

Professional services firms hold confidential client data, so IT consulting for them starts with access control, document management, and Privacy Act duties. We work with law, finance, real estate, and insurance firms, and we support businesses in Sydney.

IT Consulting for Law Firms

Law firm consulting begins with client files: who can open them, where they live, and how fast you can restore them after ransomware. Our managed IT services for law firms help keep those access and recovery controls running day to day. We also plan around the document and practice management systems law firms use, including NetDocuments, Worldox, and Actionstep.

IT Consulting for Real Estate Agencies

Real estate agencies run on a few core platforms, such as PropertyMe, Console Cloud, and REI Forms Live. We plan how your team reaches them in the office and in the field. Once the plan is in place, our managed IT services for real estate support your agency’s day-to-day IT.

 IT Consulting for Insurance Companies

For insurers, information security comes first. Those regulated by the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA) must meet Prudential Standard CPS 234 Information Security. They must also meet CPS 230 Operational Risk Management, in force since 1 July 2025, which covers risk from material service providers. With those standards in mind, our managed IT services for insurance companies help run the controls your plan sets out.

 IT Consulting for Finance Firms

Finance firms need IT that holds up through tax time and end-of-financial-year peaks, when capacity and support matter most. Through those peaks, our managed IT services for the financial industry support your systems. Your client financial records are confidential too, so we plan who can access them first.

How Does Our IT Consulting Work?

Our IT consulting works in four steps: assess, plan, design, and deliver. The first three steps each produce a document you keep, so you can act on our advice with our team or without it.

The four steps run in these order:

  • We run the IT audit and give you an assessment report on where you stand.
  • We rank projects by risk and business value, then document the IT budget and service recommendations in your roadmap.
  • We draw up the infrastructure, software, and cloud hosting your roadmap needs, and hand you the design.
  • We project-manage each rollout against the plan and report progress to you.

FAQs About IT Consulting in Sydney

The cost of IT consulting services in Sydney depends on your headcount, how many systems you run, and which of the four steps you need. Your scope sets the price, so we confirm it with you first. Book a free consultation to talk through the scope for your firm.

Yes, small businesses in Sydney can benefit from IT consulting services, and we size the work to your headcount. A ten-person practice receives a short roadmap with the biggest risks first, then projects in order of business value. Fewer staff and systems mean a shorter assessment.

What happens to your data when you stop working with us is set out in our published Master Service Agreement. We return the data we hold for you, or delete it, on termination. The obligation survives the agreement, and you can read the terms before you sign.

If you have no in-house IT person, Matrix Solutions can act as your dedicated IT function. Our managed IT services cover monitoring, patching, and maintenance, scoped to your firm. Your consulting roadmap then becomes the plan our team works to.

No, most businesses do not have to meet the Essential Eight unless a regulator, government policy, or client contract requires it. The Australian Signals Directorate (ASD) recommends it to organisations as guidance. Ask your regulator or largest client which maturity level, if any, they expect.

Yes, as a NetDocuments Platinum Partner with Migration Expert certification, Matrix Solutions can plan and run your move to NetDocuments. We build the move into your roadmap, then project-manage the rollout against that plan. Ask us how the move would fit your current document management system.

Before your free IT consultation, prepare a short list: staff and device counts, main business applications, and IT contracts with renewal dates. Recent incidents and planned office moves go on it. If you go ahead, our team uses that list to scope the assessment.

It is time to hire an IT consultant in Sydney when nobody owns your technology decisions. Other signs include repeat outages, an office move or merger, or a security questionnaire you cannot answer. Another is when the one person who knows your systems resigns.

When choosing an IT consultant in Sydney, look for one who explains exactly what you will receive before you sign. Ask who will advise you and how often they meet you. Check that the scope names each document, such as the assessment report.
